The four main islands are Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai — each with its own character. Siberut is the largest and most visited for jungle and tribe experiences; Sipora and the Pagais are the main surf destinations.<h3>Getting There</h3>🚢 By Ferry from Padang: Ferries and speedboats depart from Padang's Teluk Bayur Harbor to the Mentawai Islands. Public ferries are what most tourists use — the crossing takes 3 to 6 hours depending on the route, and a one-way ticket costs around 350,000 IDR (approximately €20). Renting a private speedboat is possible but very expensive.⚠️ Book your ferry a couple days in advance, especially in high season. Departures are not always frequent and spaces fill up✈️ By Plane: Fly into Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang, with connections from Jakarta, Medan, Batam, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Siberut and Sipora do have some roads, but don't expect the freedom you'd have in Thailand or Bali — there are no taxis, no Grab, and infrastructure is basic. The main way to move between villages, surf spots, and islands is by small boat. This is the single most important thing to understand before you book your accommodation — because once you're settled somewhere, your options for exploring independently are very limited.<h3>Weather</h3>☀️ Dry Season (June–August): Best time to visit — warm, humid, with the best surf conditions and minimal rain.🌸 Transition (March–May): Decreasing rainfall, good conditions for both surf and jungle experiences.🍂 Wet Season (September–February): Heavy rain and potential disruptions. Surf can still be excellent but plan for rain.💡 Surf season peaks between March and October — if that's your main reason for coming, plan accordingly<h3>Accommodation</h3>As I said — choosing the right accommodation is everything here. A great base for anyone who wants to experience the Mentawai beyond just surfing.💡 Homestay tip: if you prefer a more local experience, homestays are available — particularly on Siberut. Make sure it's located near roads for at least some freedom to get around independently.<h3>What to do in the Mentawai Islands</h3><h2>Surfing</h2>The Mentawai Islands are considered one of the best surf destinations in the world — and for good reason. The most famous breaks are concentrated around Sipora and the Pagai Islands, with legendary spots like Hollow Trees (HT's), Lance's Right, and Macaronis drawing surfers from every corner of the globe.A few things to know before you paddle out:<ul><li>The waves break over reef, not sand. This makes them fast, powerful, and unforgiving — beautiful for experienced surfers, but not the place to learn.</li><li>The Mentawai is not a beginner destination. Spending time with them is one of the most authentic and humbling travel experiences I've ever had.The journey to reach the tribe takes around 6 hours — a combination of driving, a canoe ride, and trekking through the jungle. It's not easy to get there, but the moment you arrive it's completely worth it. You sleep in the families' homes, eat with them, and experience a way of life that most of the world has never seen. A local guide translates — the tribe speaks a unique dialect that even most Indonesians don't understand.✨ It's not comfortable. It's not Instagram-perfect. It's real — and that's exactly what makes it extraordinary.The experience is organised separately from your surf accommodation. Tours can be arranged through your accommodation — but again, check before you book that your resort actually offers this.<h2>🍽️ Local Food</h2>The Mentawai cuisine is simple, fresh, and deeply rooted in the local environment. The staple is sago — a starchy substance derived from palm trees, prepared as a doughy bread or thick porridge. The Mentawai people rely heavily on seafood — fish, shellfish, and crabs, often grilled or smoked over an open fire. Mentawai Islands Indonesia: What Nobody Tells You Before You Go

There are hikes that are beautiful. And then there are hikes that change you. Mount Kerinci is the second kind. At 3,805 metres, it's the highest volcano in Indonesia and one of the most rewarding treks in all of Southeast Asia — two days through dense jungle, a pre-dawn push to the summit, and a sunrise over an immense volcanic crater that reflects on the plains below. The park spans over 13,000 square kilometres of tropical rainforest and is home to extraordinary biodiversity, including Sumatran tigers, elephants, and rhinos.<h3>Transportation &amp; Exploration</h3>🚗 Private Driver: The most common starting point is Padang, the capital of West Sumatra. From Padang, the journey to the Kerinci area takes approximately 7 hours by private driver — long, but entirely worth it. The roads are mostly unpaved and can be rough, especially in wet conditions, so a private driver is by far the most practical and comfortable option.⚠️ Don't underestimate the journey — 7 hours on rough roads is tiring. Plan to arrive the day before your hike starts and rest🚌 By Bus: There is also a public bus from Padang, which many backpackers doing longer trips across Sumatra use to keep costs down. ⚠️ That said, the bus takes even longer than the private driver and is significantly less comfortable. This is when you want to go.🌸 Transition (March–May): Decreasing rainfall — a reasonable window for hiking.🍂 Wet Season (September–February): Trails become muddy and slippery, and cloud cover at the summit is almost guaranteed. Possible but not ideal.💡 Cloud cover at the summit is always a possibility, even in the dry season. We had some clouds on our hike but still witnessed extraordinary views. Go with realistic expectations — and hope for the best.<h3>Accommodation</h3><ul><li>Padang (before/after the trek): Sentosa Lodge 🅱️ <a data-mce-href="https://booking.tp.st/ajN8pNw1" href="https://booking.tp.st/ajN8pNw1">Booking</a> 🔗</li><li>Kerinci National Park (base before the hike — arranged by Wild Sumatra): Resort Family 🦉 <a data-mce-href="https://tripadvisor.tp.st/jwDiy9h6" href="https://tripadvisor.tp.st/jwDiy9h6">Tripadvisor</a> 🔗 — this is where Wild Sumatra placed us for the first night, so if you book through them you'll likely stay here too.</li></ul><h2>The Trek</h2><ul><li>Difficulty: Moderate to challenging — manageable without extensive hiking experience, but not recommended for complete beginners due to altitude and jungle terrain.</li><li>Duration: 2 days (possible in 3 for a more relaxed pace)</li><li>What's included (when booked through an agency): Guide, food, tent, camping equipment, and first night homestay at the base.</li></ul><h3>Day 1 — Into the Jungle</h3>The hike begins around 10:00 AM. On day one you'll cover 1,700 metres of ascent over approximately 6 hours, reaching the campsite at 3,500 metres around 04:00 PM — though timing varies depending on your pace and the group.The trail winds through dense tropical jungle — lush, humid, and incredibly atmospheric. The pace is slow and steady, which makes it accessible to most fitness levels, but don't let that fool you — by the time you reach camp you'll have earned your rest. The trail is manageable but not always obvious: there are no signs or markers along the way, and the first jungle section in particular can be disorienting. Having a guide is not just recommended, it's essential.By the time you reach the campsite you'll be tired, sweaty, and ready to eat. The agency provides all food and camping equipment. Rest well — you'll need it for what's coming.⚠️ If it has rained recently, expect mud. Real mud. The jungle trail can be extremely slippery and messy — I started the hike dry and arrived back at the base absolutely covered. The final 300 metres to the summit are the hardest — altitude kicks in and the terrain becomes more exposed. But as you approach the top, the sky starts to lighten, and then — sunrise.Standing at 3,805 metres on an active volcano, watching the enormous crater emerge from the dawn light and reflect on the plains stretching below — it's one of those moments you simply can't prepare yourself for. The views on a clear morning stretch further than you can imagine. The trail has no markers, the jungle section is easy to get lost in, and the agency handles absolutely everything: guide, food, tents, equipment, and the first-night homestay at the base.The agency I used and recommend is Wild Sumatra — professional, well-organised, and genuinely passionate about the mountain. 💸 Cost is approximately €200 per person, all inclusive.<h3>What to Pack</h3>This is important — the jungle environment is unforgiving. Here's what I recommend:🥾 Sturdy hiking boots — waterproof if possible. The trail gets muddy. 👖 Long trousers — always. The jungle is dense and the terrain is rough. No shorts. 🧥 Warm layers — it gets cold at altitude, especially at 4:00 AM on summit day. 🎒 Change of clothes — at least one full change. I started dry and came back covered in mud. My honest recommendation: do at least one night in the jungle. A half-day or full-day trek is often crowded and doesn't give you enough time to truly explore. The heat and humidity are real — pace yourself and drink plenty of water. By 3:00 PM we reached the river for a swim — one of the most refreshing moments of the entire trip after hours in the jungle heat. Then another hour and a half of hiking to reach the campsite for the night.Sleeping in the jungle is an experience in itself. The sounds, the air, the complete darkness — it's unlike any night you've spent before.✨ Our guide was exceptional — experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the forest. We found many orangutans, including mothers with babies. Completely magical.<h3>🛶 Return by River — Don't Skip This</h3>On the second day, instead of hiking back through the jungle, I took the rubber boat return down the river — and I cannot recommend it enough. It's fun, it's scenic, and it saves you from hiking back in the midday heat, which is long and exhausting. The Grab app works well in larger cities like Padang.
