Practical Information

Location

Salento is the southernmost part of the Puglia region, often referred to as the “heel” of Italy’s boot. It stretches from the city of Lecce down to Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet.

Transportation & Exploration

🚗 The best (and almost essential) way to explore Salento’s beaches is by car. Many of the most beautiful spots—hidden coves, sandy bays, and natural reserves—are not easily reachable by public transport.

Having your own car gives you the freedom to beach-hop along the coast, discover less crowded areas, and stop wherever the water looks too good to resist. It also makes it easy to combine different beaches in the same day and explore at your own pace.

👉 You can rent a car on Booking🔗

💸 Most beach parking areas accept credit cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash with you, as some places may only accept cash

🥪 For many of the beaches I’m going to mention, there are little to no facilities available, so I recommend always bringing your own lunch. In the morning, you can stop at any local panetteria (bakery) along the way and pick up some food and water to take with you. Even where there are lidos or facilities, they often offer low-quality food at relatively high prices.

Weather

Salento has a classic Mediterranean climate, which makes it a great beach destination for most of the year—but the best time to visit is from late May to early October.

During this period, you’ll find warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and sea conditions that are perfect for swimming. The peak summer months (July and August) are the hottest and most crowded, while June and September are ideal if you want the same beautiful weather with fewer people and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Outside of this period, the sea can still be beautiful to look at, but it’s generally too cold for beach days and swimming.
