Perched on a hill just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast, Ostuni is one of the most iconic towns in southern Italy. Known as La Città Bianca (the White City), its maze of whitewashed houses glows under the sun, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding olive groves that stretch endlessly toward the sea.

Transportation & Exploration

🚆 By Train & Bus: Ostuni has a train station on the main Adriatic line, but it’s located about 3 km (1.8 miles) from the old town.

🚗 By Car: Renting a car is highly recommended. It gives you the freedom to explore nearby beaches, countryside masserie, and charming towns like Alberobello or Polignano a Mare at your own pace.

✈️ By Plane: The closest airport is Brindisi Airport (Salento Airport, BDS)🔗, about 35 minutes (30 km / 18.6 miles) away. Bari Airport (BRI)🔗is another option, roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes (100 km / 62 miles) from Ostuni.

Ostuni Old Town

Explore the charming historic center of Ostuni, a maze of narrow alleys and whitewashed houses that give the city its iconic nickname, La Città Bianca. The buildings were originally painted with lime during the 17th-century plagues, thanks to its natural antibacterial properties—a detail that adds even more character to this already unique town.

Make sure to stop by the famous Porta Azzurra🔗 —it’s one of the most photographed spots in the city and perfect for that classic Ostuni shot.

Ostuni Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta)🔗

Located at the highest point of the old town, this is one of Ostuni’s must-see landmarks.

Its façade is truly impressive, featuring one of the largest rose windows in Europe, with 24 rays symbolizing the hours of the day. Inside, don’t miss the 18th-century ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the life of Christ.

Arco Scoppa🔗

This elegant arch connects the Bishop’s Palace to the Seminary and is often compared to the Bridge of Sighs in Venice.

Walk through it for one of the best viewpoints in town, with sweeping views over the countryside and all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Piazza della Libertà🔗

The lively heart of Ostuni, perfect for a break between sightseeing. Look for the 21-meter-high Column of Sant’Oronzo, a baroque obelisk built to thank the city’s patron saint for protecting it from the plague.

Grab a drink, sit back, and enjoy some classic Italian people-watching.

Church of San Francesco d'Assisi🔗

This 15th-century church stands right on the main square and is part of the former monastery that now houses the town hall (Palazzo Municipale).

Inside, you’ll find elegant frescoes and sculptures—worth a quick visit while exploring the center. Entry is usually free.

Ostuni Coastline

Just a short drive from Ostuni (about 10–15 minutes / 6–9 miles), you’ll find a beautiful stretch of coastline with something for every type of traveler—from easy beach clubs to wild, untouched nature.

• Villanova🔗: The closest and most convenient seaside area to Ostuni. It’s perfect if you’re looking for an easy beach day with restaurants, lidos (beach clubs), and all facilities. Ideal for a relaxed, no-stress experience.
• Torre Pozzella🔗: A more rugged and natural coastline, made up of small coves, rocky inlets, and crystal-clear water. It’s less crowded and perfect if you prefer a quieter, more authentic setting. Bring water shoes if you plan to swim.
• Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve🔗: The most unique spot in the area—a protected natural reserve with unspoiled beaches, dunes, and Mediterranean vegetation. ✨ Perfect if you’re looking for a more wild and scenic experience.

👉 Access is regulated to preserve the ecosystem, and you’ll need to park outside (approx. €5) and either walk or take a shuttle. 

Sunset in Ostuni

One of the best things to do in Ostuni is simply slowing down and watching the city change colors at sunset. As the sun goes down, the white buildings turn golden and the whole atmosphere becomes even more magical.

Head to this panoramic view🔗 for one of the best viewpoints, where you can enjoy open views over the olive groves stretching all the way to the sea.
