Unlike larger and more chaotic destinations, Otranto moves at a slower pace. It’s a place where you wander without a plan, stop often for sea views, and let the rhythm of the town guide your day.

Transportation & Exploration

🚶‍♂️ On Foot: Otranto is small and easy to explore by walking, especially its historic center. 

🚆 By Train & Bus: Buses connect Otranto to nearby towns, but schedules can be limited, especially outside peak season.

🚗 By Car: The best way to explore the area around Otranto is by car, allowing you to reach nearby beaches and hidden coastal spots at your own pace.

✈️ By Plane: The nearest airports are Brindisi Airport (Salento Airport, BDS)🔗, about 1 hour away by car. Bari Airport (BRI)🔗is another option, located around 2–2.5 hours away. From both airports, renting a car is the easiest way to reach Otranto and explore the region.

Best Time to Visit

Salento enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with long, sunny summers and mild winters.

Otranto Puglia

Otranto is one of those places that instantly feels like summer in Puglia — white stone glowing under the sun, deep blue sea, and a relaxed rhythm that makes you slow down without even trying.

It’s the kind of destination where you come for a quick stop and end up staying longer, drawn in by its mix of history, coastline, and easy Mediterranean atmosphere.

Cathedral of Otranto

At the heart of the old town stands the cathedral, home to one of the most fascinating mosaic floors in Italy. Covering almost the entire interior, the mosaic feels like a giant story carved in stone, filled with symbols and scenes that reveal new details the longer you look at them.

Castello Aragonese

Just a few steps from the sea, the castle is one of the main landmarks of Otranto and a symbol of its defensive past.

Inside, you can explore towers, walls, and exhibition spaces, while outside it’s already worth it just for the views.

Otranto Historic Center

Otranto’s old town is best explored without a plan — a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and hidden corners.

Waterfront Walk

Near the harbor, the pace slows down even more — fishing boats, sea views, and cafés make it a perfect place to relax.

Torre Sant'Emiliano

A short drive from town, this historic watchtower sits on a panoramic stretch of coastline.

Beaches

The coastline around Otranto is one of the highlights of the region. Below are some of my favorite:

• Baia dei Turchi🔗 → wide, natural, and scenic
• Porto Badisco🔗→ more rugged and peaceful

✨ I can’t recommend Baia dei Turchi enough. The beach is wide and spacious, with stunning crystal-clear water. There are a few lidos, but not too many — keeping the atmosphere quite natural and wild.

Lighthouse of Punta Palascìa

The easternmost point of Italy, marked by a lighthouse standing on dramatic cliffs.

It’s one of the most scenic spots near Otranto, especially at sunrise or sunset.
