The glacier has crevasses, and the altitude can be tough to handle. It’s an excellent choice for experienced hikers looking to conquer their first alpine peak. Be sure to check the operating schedules for the cable cars in advance. Weather: The best time to visit Capanna Margherita is during the summer months when the weather is more stable and the views are clear. Accommodation: You can stay overnight at <a data-mce-href="http://www.rifugimonterosa.it/it/web/capanna-gnifetti-10" href="http://www.rifugimonterosa.it/it/web/capanna-gnifetti-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Capanna Gnifetti</a> (3647 m/11965 ft) or <a data-mce-href="https://www.rifugiomantova.it/" href="https://www.rifugiomantova.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rifugio Mantova</a> (3498 m/11476 ft).<h2>Day 1: </h2>Upon reaching the Indren Glacier, traverse over glacially-polished rocks with a gentle ascent to gain a foothold on the rocky spur. You can choose to pass by the Mantova Hut by staying on the trail that follows further to the left, or head towards the Gnifetti Hut by climbing more decisively to the right (fixed ropes and steps) to reach the top of the spur. The route involves some steep sections near the Vincent Pyramid and the Cristo delle Vette (Balmenhorn). The climb becomes gentler in this extraordinary environment, passing at the base of the Corno Nero, Ludwigshöhe, and Parrotspitze, eventually reaching the Lys Pass (4,250 m). A traverse slightly downhill under the Parrotspitze brings you below the Punta Gnifetti. If you're looking for more comfort, consider hiring a private car and driver, especially for long journeys between cities or remote areas. Be prepared for winding roads, varied driving conditions, and delays—logistics in Sumatra are as much about the experience as they are about the destination!&nbsp;I wouldn't recommend renting a car in Sumatra due to the often bumpy and challenging road conditions. Instead, take advantage of the affordable prices of taxis and public transportation, especially if you own euros, dollars, or similar currencies. To save time, I opted to avoid public transport altogether, as finding schedules can be nearly impossible and buses often arrive unpredictably. If you have plenty of time and enjoy the adventure, public transportation can be a viable option. The hike to the summit is relatively accessible and offers spectacular views of the crater, geothermal activity, and the surrounding highlands. The best time to hike is early morning to catch the sunrise and enjoy clear views. You can do this hike on your own or with local guides. Tourists tend to hire guides, as the path is not so easy to find. Additionally they will arrange the trasfer to the beginning of the hike, nearby Berastagi. From there it takes one hour to reach the summit. The hotel itself was also great—it’s nestled right in the jungle, and you get to sleep in your own private bungalow. The village is set along the banks of the Bahorok River, offering a picturesque and serene environment.What to do in Bukit Lawang:<h3>Orangutan trek Sumatra&nbsp;</h3>The primary attraction in Bukit Lawang is the opportunity to see Sumatran orangutans in the wild. Guided treks through Gunung Leuser National Park offer the chance to observe these endangered primates in their natural habitat. Treks can range from half-day to multi-day excursions, with the possibility of camping in the jungle.I opted for a two-day jungle adventure because a one-day excursion seemed too short and is often crowded, with many tourists choosing only a half-day or full-day trip. Keep in mind that the hike is long and tiring, especially with the heat and high humidity. We started our hike at 9 AM, trekking up and down jungle trails in search of orangutans until 3 PM. Afterward, we hiked for another hour and a half to reach our campsite, where we would spend the night. It was refreshing to take a dip in the river and wash off the day’s exertion. The next day, we made our way back by following the river, similar to rafting.
