Location

North Sumatra is a province on the northwestern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia's largest island. The region spans from dense tropical rainforest in the west to volcanic highlands in the centre, with the bustling city of Medan as its capital and main gateway.

Transportation & Exploration

✈️ By Plane: The main gateway to North Sumatra is Kualanamu International Airport, located about 40 km (25 mi) from Medan. It’s one of Indonesia’s busiest airports, offering frequent domestic flights from Jakarta, Bali, and other major cities, as well as international connections to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang. From Medan, you can easily reach North Sumatra’s top destinations — such as Lake Toba, Bukit Lawang, and Berastagi — by private car or public bus.

🚗 By Car: Renting a car in Sumatra is generally not recommended. Roads can be tricky, with narrow lanes, unpredictable traffic, and sometimes poor signage, especially in rural areas. On top of that, renting a car with a driver can be expensive, and navigating the island on your own may be stressful.

⚠️ Instead, it’s easier and safer to rely on local transport options, such as private drivers, buses, or domestic flights, to get around the island comfortably.

🚖 Getting Around: The most practical options are private drivers, shared taxis (angkot), and the Grab app in larger cities like Medan. For longer intercity journeys, hiring a private driver or taking a bus is the most comfortable option.

⚠️ For longer distances, Sumatra is well-connected by domestic flights, which make traveling between major destinations like Medan or Padang convenient and efficient.

Weather

North Sumatra has a tropical climate with a wet and dry season:

☀️ Dry Season (June–August): The best time for trekking and outdoor activities. Warm and humid with occasional showers.

🌸 Transition (March–May): Decreasing rainfall, pleasant temperatures — a good time to visit.

🍂 Wet Season (September–February): Increasing rainfall, lush landscapes. Travel is still possible but expect some disruptions.

Medan

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra and your entry point into the region — most travellers arrive here by plane and head straight out to explore. The city itself isn't a major destination, but it's worth knowing where to stay if you have a night before or after your travels.

Bukit Lawang 

Bukit Lawang is a small village on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park — and the best base for seeing wild Sumatran orangutans. Set along the banks of the Bahorok River, it's a beautiful and atmospheric place surrounded by dense rainforest.

Guided treks into the national park range from half-day walks to multi-day jungle expeditions with overnight camping. The orangutans are the main draw, but the park is also home to Thomas leaf monkeys, gibbons, macaques, hornbills, and the elusive Sumatran tiger.

Berastagi

Berastagi is a scenic highland town sitting at around 1,300 metres above sea level in the Karo Highlands — cool, green, and completely different in atmosphere from the jungle lowlands. It's the base for hiking Mount Sibayak, an active volcano with a spectacular crater and geothermal activity, and for exploring the traditional Karo villages of the surrounding area.
