Cefalù Sicily: Complete Guide with Castelbuono & Gole di Tiberio

May 06, 2026By Emma Rigo

Northern Sicily has a completely different character from the baroque south or the volcanic east — greener, wilder, and far less visited. Cefalù is the jewel of this stretch of coast: a medieval town with a cathedral that will stop you in your tracks, a beach that rivals anything in the Mediterranean, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it dangerously easy to stay longer than planned. Venture inland and you'll find Castelbuono — a charming village with some of the best food in Sicily — and the Gole di Tiberio, one of the island's most spectacular and underrated natural wonders.

Practical Information

Location

Cefalù sits on the northern coast of Sicily, about 70 kilometres east of Palermo, nestled between the sea and the dramatic rocky headland of La Rocca. Castelbuono is about 20 kilometres inland in the Madonie mountains. The Gole di Tiberio are located in the Madonie Park, near San Mauro Castelverde, about 40 kilometres from Cefalù.

Transportation & Exploration

✈️ By Plane: The closest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (PMO), about 1 hour from Cefalù, with frequent connections to major European cities and Italian hubs.

👉 You can book your plane ticket here🔗

🚗 By Car: A car is essential for visiting Castelbuono and the Gole di Tiberio. For Cefalù itself, the historic centre is best explored on foot — park on the outskirts and walk in.

👉 You can book your car on Booking🔗

🚆 By Train: Cefalù is on the Palermo–Messina line and easily reachable by train. A great option if you're just visiting the town itself — but you'll need a car for Castelbuono and the Gole.

🚶 On Foot: Cefalù's historic centre is compact and best explored on foot. Castelbuono's old town is the same — once you arrive, everything is walkable.

Weather

☀️ Summer (June–August): Hot and sunny, perfect for the beach. Cefalù gets busy in July and August — book accommodation well in advance.

🍂 Autumn (September–October): Still warm, fewer tourists, and the Madonie countryside turns beautiful colours. The best time for the Gole di Tiberio.

🌸 Spring (April–May): Mild and lovely — wildflowers in the Madonie, ideal weather for hiking and sightseeing.

❄️ Winter (December–February): Quiet and atmospheric. Cefalù is mild; Castelbuono and the Madonie can get cold and occasionally snowy.

💡 My favourite time? September — warm sea, golden light, and the north coast finally breathes again.

Accommodation

Cefalù is the natural base for this area — charming, central, and with good transport links.

Cefalù

⏱️ Recommended time: 1 full day

Cefalù is one of Sicily's most picturesque coastal towns — and it earns that reputation. A golden beach right next to a medieval old town, a cathedral that took eight centuries to complete, and a dramatic rocky headland looming above it all. It's beautiful, manageable, and genuinely charming. Come for the cathedral, stay for the beach.

What to See

  • Cefalù Cathedral🔗 (Duomo di Cefalù)— A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Sicily. The Byzantine mosaics of Christ Pantocrator inside are extraordinary — among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.
  • Old Town — Narrow medieval streets lined with shops, cafés, and trattorias. Best explored in the early morning or evening when the light is soft and the crowds thin out.
  • Cefalù Beach🔗— A long sandy stretch right next to the old town, with clear water and a stunning backdrop. One of the best town beaches in all of Sicily.
  • Spiaggia Kalura🔗— A lesser-known beach a short distance from the centre, with crystal-clear water and plenty of colourful fish — great for snorkelling.

🍽️ Where to Eat

Al Gallo D'Oro 🔗 — A chill, relaxed spot perfect for lunch. Order the chicken — it's excellent and exactly the kind of simple, honest cooking that makes you want to come back.

Castelnuovo

⏱️ Recommended time: half day to 1 full day

Castelbuono is one of those places that tourists consistently skip — which is exactly why you should go. Tucked into the Madonie mountains about 20 kilometres inland from Cefalù, it's a charming village with cobbled streets, small piazzas, and warm local hospitality. But the real reason to come here is the food — this is some of the best eating in northern Sicily, and it's all about the land rather than the sea.

  • Historic Center — Stroll through narrow lanes lined with stone houses and soak in the timeless atmosphere. Castelbuono is made for slow wandering.
  • Castelnuovo’s Famous Panettone — Castelbuono is famous across Sicily for its artisanal panettone, made year-round with high-quality local ingredients — pistachios, citrus, almonds. But the real experience is eating it the local way: a slice of warm panettone with a scoop of gelato and a dollop of whipped cream. It sounds indulgent. It is indulgent. Do it anyway.

👉 Head to Fiasconaro 🔗 — the most famous panettone maker in Castelbuono and one of the most celebrated in all of Italy. This is the place.

🍽️ Where to Eat

Castelbuono has a genuinely excellent restaurant scene — cucina di terra, hearty and authentic, rooted in the Madonie mountains rather than the sea. Two spots I recommend:

  • Giardino di Venere 🔗 — One of the best restaurants in town, serving authentic Madonie cuisine with excellent quality. A proper sit-down dinner spot.
  • Palazzaccio Ristorante 🔗 — Another excellent option for traditional Sicilian mountain cooking. Both Giardino di Venere and Palazzaccio are the kind of restaurants where you eat well, drink local wine, and completely lose track of time.

Gole di Tiberio

⏱️ Recommended time: half day

Hidden in the Madonie Park near San Mauro Castelverde, the Gole di Tiberio are one of Sicily's most underrated natural wonders — and one of the best kept secrets in the north of the island. A dramatic canyon carved by the Pollina River, with limestone cliffs towering up to 50 metres, emerald green water, and a sense of complete wilderness. It's part of a UNESCO Global Geopark and steeped in local legends. If you're anywhere near Cefalù or Castelbuono, this is non-negotiable.
