Naples Food Guide

Naples boasts a culinary landscape as vibrant and diverse as its history, shaped by centuries of cultural exchanges along its bustling shores. From the bustling markets to quaint local eateries, the city's gastronomy offers a tantalizing fusion of flavors. Among its renowned street food offerings, the folded pizza stands out as a quintessential Neapolitan delicacy, perfect for indulging in on the move. Of course, no visit to Naples is complete without savoring its iconic invention, pizza, served up in bustling pizzerias where reservations are a rarity, so early arrival is key to avoiding lengthy queues.

Yet, the culinary adventure extends far beyond pizza. Delight your palate with a plethora of local specialties, from the creamy richness of Mozzarella di Bufala to the savory allure of Struffoli, Frittata di pasta, Fagioli e cozze, Puttanesca, Ragù napoletano, and Parmigiana di melanzane. Sweet treats abound as well, with irresistible offerings like Babà and Sfogliatella tempting taste buds at every turn.

Pizza

You can’t visit Naples without diving headfirst into the city’s most iconic dish: pizza. It’s not just food here—it’s culture, tradition, and pride baked into a wood-fired oven.

The classic Neapolitan pizza (pizza Napoletana) has strict rules: soft, elastic dough; San Marzano tomatoes; creamy mozzarella; fresh basil; and a blistered, puffy crust from the forno a legna (wood oven).

That brings us to the local street version: pizza a portafoglio. This is a smaller pizza, folded twice (first in half, then again like a wallet—portafoglio means “wallet” in Italian) and wrapped in paper, perfect for eating on the go. It’s greasy, piping hot, and utterly delicious. Locals grab it from street vendors and eat it standing up, often right on the sidewalk.

Sfogliatella

One of the most famous Neapolitan pastries, sfogliatella comes in two varieties: "riccia" (curly) and "frolla" (shortcrust). The riccia features thin layers of pastry filled with sweet ricotta cheese, candied fruit, and orange zest, while the frolla has a thicker, softer crust.

👉 In my opinion, the best sfogliatella in Naples can be found at Sfogliatelle Attanasio where they bake fresh batches all day long—so you’re almost guaranteed to get one warm and straight from the oven.

Babà

This small, rum-soaked cake is a staple of Neapolitan pastry. It has a spongy texture and is often filled with whipped cream or pastry cream.

Zeppole

Traditionally enjoyed during the feast of Saint Joseph, zeppole are fried dough balls dusted with powdered sugar. They can be filled with custard, cream, or even ricotta.

Torta al Limoncello

A sweet slice of the Amalfi Coast! Torta al limoncello is a soft, moist cake infused with limoncello liqueur, giving it a bright, citrusy aroma and a slightly boozy kick. Often layered with lemon cream or dusted with powdered sugar, it’s a refreshing dessert that's especially popular in Naples and nearby coastal towns.

👉 I had a fantastic torta al limoncello at Osteria La Chitarra—homemade by the owner, it was bursting with flavor and without a doubt the best dessert I had in Naples

Frittatina di Pasta

Imagine spaghetti mixed with béchamel, peas, meat, and cheese—then breaded and deep-fried. That’s frittatina, Naples’ ultimate street snack. It’s indulgent, messy, and unforgettable.

👉 Frittatine di pasta are excellent almost everywhere in Naples, and a popular recommendation is Da Michele. However, I highly recommend trying the one at Pizzeria i Decumani—it was easily one of the best I had during my stay, far better than many of the more famous spots."

Cuoppo Napoletano

A paper cone (cuoppo) filled with deep-fried goodies: calamari, shrimp, anchovies, zucchini flowers, arancini, and potato croquettes. It’s a crunchy, salty dream best eaten while wandering the city streets.

👉I recommend stopping by Pescheria Azzurra for a delicious cuoppo—fresh, fried seafood served in a paper cone

Parmigiana di Melanzane

Layers of eggplant, tomato sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan, baked to bubbling perfection. It’s not unique to Naples, but the local version is often lighter and more aromatic thanks to fresh basil and high-quality ingredients.

👉 Be sure to order the parmigiana at Trattoria Speranzella—this excellent restaurant specializes in local dishes, and their parmigiana was absolutely outstanding.

Mozzarella di Bufala

In Naples, mozzarella is often made from the rich milk of water buffalo—known as mozzarella di bufala. It's creamier, tangier, and more flavorful than the more common cow’s milk mozzarella (fior di latte), with a soft texture that releases a burst of milky liquid when you cut into it. It’s best enjoyed fresh, either paired with ripe tomatoes or simply on its own with a drizzle of olive oil.

👉 Don’t miss the mozzarella at Osteria La Chitarra—it was incredibly fresh and flavorful, easily one of the best I had in Naples.

Espresso Napoletano

Naples takes its coffee seriously. It’s strong, short, and full-bodied, served in steaming hot porcelain cups. Locals drink it quickly, usually standing at the bar—because if you sit down, you’ll often pay nearly double for the same espresso.

Restaurant Recommendations in Naples

Below are some excellent restaurants to try in Naples. The "" reflects the price range.

Trattoria

The recommendations below are local trattorie—unpretentious, often family-run restaurants scattered throughout Naples that serve traditional Neapolitan specialties in a relaxed setting:

💡 Bonus Tip: Skip Trattoria da Nennella! While it’s one of the most famous trattorias in Naples, in my opinion it has become a bit of a tourist trap. These days, the focus seems to be more on the theatrical experience than the food itself. If you're after authentic flavors and a genuine local vibe, there are better options in the city.
