Sardinia itinerary 7 days

If you’re exploring Northern Sardinia, Capo Testa is one of those places that immediately feels different from everything else on the island. Just a few minutes from Santa Teresa Gallura, this small peninsula is famous for its surreal granite formations shaped by wind, salt, and time.

It’s not a typical beach stop. It’s more like walking through a natural sculpture park, where massive rocks create hidden paths, viewpoints, and secluded coves overlooking an incredibly blue sea.

Practical Information

Location

Capo Testa is located just a few minutes from Santa Teresa Gallura, in the far north of Sardinia. It’s easily reachable by car and is one of the most striking granite landscapes on the island.

Transportation & Exploration

✈️ By Plane: Sardinia has three main airports, all well connected to mainland Italy and major European cities:

  • Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) – best for southern Sardinia
  • Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) – ideal for the northeast
  • Alghero Fertilia Airport (AHO) – convenient for the northwest

All airports offer regular flights from Rome and Milan, plus many seasonal international connections.

🚗 By car: The site is best reached by car. There is a parking area near Capo Testa, but it can get very busy in summer, especially in the late afternoon. Arriving early or closer to sunset is recommended.

⚠️ Driving in Sardinia is generally relaxed and safer than in many parts of Italy, but keep in mind:

  • Long distances between towns
  • Narrow and winding rural roads
  • Animals crossing the road in inland areas

🚆 Trains & Buses: Public transport in Sardinia is limited and slow. Trenitalia operates the main rail lines connecting Cagliari, Oristano, Sassari, and Olbia. ARST buses reach smaller towns, but schedules are infrequent, especially on weekends.

⚠️ Public transport is not ideal for beach hopping or reaching remote areas.

🚶‍♂️ On Foot: Exploring Valle della Luna involves short but uneven trails over granite rocks. Proper shoes are strongly recommended.

Weather

Capo Testa is exposed and can feel very hot during peak summer hours.

☀️ Summer (June–August): very hot, strong sun, minimal shade
🌸 Spring & 🍂 Autumn: ideal temperatures for hiking and exploring

Wind is common year-round due to the exposed coastal position

👉 The best time to visit is late afternoon or sunset, when temperatures drop and the light enhances the granite landscape.

Capo Testa & Valle della Luna – Complete Guide

Located just outside Santa Teresa Gallura, Capo Testa is one of the most unique landscapes in Northern Sardinia. This small peninsula is shaped by massive granite formations sculpted over thousands of years by wind and sea, creating an almost surreal environment that feels completely different from the rest of the island.

It’s not just a beach destination — it’s a place to explore. Walking through Capo Testa feels like moving through a natural sculpture park, where every path leads to hidden coves, panoramic viewpoints, and dramatic openings over the sea.

At the center of this landscape lies Valle della Luna (Valley of the Moon), one of the most atmospheric and distinctive places in Sardinia.

For decades, this valley has attracted travelers looking for something more alternative and untouched. In the 1960s, it became a refuge for free-spirited communities drawn to its isolation and raw beauty. Even today, it still carries a quiet, almost timeless atmosphere.

✨ Exploring the valley means following narrow trails through the rocks, which gradually open up to small beaches with crystal-clear water — perfect for swimming, relaxing, or simply disconnecting.

Walk the trails to Valle della Luna

Several informal paths connect Capo Testa to Valle della Luna, making the walk itself part of the experience.

  • Duration: 15–30 minutes depending on the route
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Terrain: rocky and uneven, with some exposed sections
Along the way, you’ll get continuous views over the coastline and the surrounding granite landscape.

Hike from the lighthouse to Spiaggia Valle della Luna

The most popular and accessible route starts near the lighthouse and leads directly to the main beach inside the valley.

  • Duration: ~20 minutes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Path: narrow and rocky, but manageable with proper shoes. This is the best option if you want a direct and scenic way to reach the beach. The hike starts from the lighthouse🔗.
