- Tashkent: Anvar's Guests
1. Street Markets
Each city has its own bazaar where the locals go for groceries. I'm someone who loves a crowded market, I loved the ones in Bukhara and Tashkent (Locations: in Bukhara, in Tashkent). Explore the labyrinthine alleys brimming with spices and local produce, immersing yourself in the authentic hustle and bustle of daily life. The bazaar that disappointed me a little was in Samarcand, as it's full of tourists and doesn't feel authentic anymore. For a more immersive experience, consider booking a tour in advance with a knowledgeable local guide.

2. Khiva at Night Time
Experience the enchanting allure of Khiva under the cloak of night. Wander through the ancient streets as historical sites come alive with atmospheric lighting, offering a glimpse into the city's storied past. A great way to explore the city is with a guide, as the city hides many hidden spots. I suggest Khiva: City Highlights Guided Walking Tour.

3. Offbeat Restaurants
Discover hidden culinary gems favored by locals in Bukhara and Samarkand. Indulge in authentic Uzbek cuisine at establishments like Jam, Café Shohrud in Bukhara, and Shokhrukh Nur in Samarcand, where flavorful dishes and warm hospitality await.
4. Rooftop Views
Elevate your perspective and soak in panoramic vistas:
Khiva: I recommend either Kuhna Ark or the Terrassa Cafe & Restaurant. I had hopes for the city walls, which are really nice but you don't have that great view over the historic part of the city.
Bukhara: I recommend Coffee&Shops, it has a nice view over one of the prettiest squares in Bukhara.
5. Registan at sunset
Witness the majestic beauty of Samarkand's Registan complex bathed in the warm hues of sunset. Climb to the upper levels of Madrasa Ulugh Beg for a breathtaking view of the illuminated gardens below (the stairs are in the souvenir shops). You can also hire a guide to visit the Registan complex, such as this one.

6. Shopping in Uzbekistan
Explore the rich artisanal heritage of Uzbekistan and acquire unique handmade treasures, from intricate Persian carpets in Bukhara to locally crafted souvenirs. Take your time to peruse multiple shops and appreciate the craftsmanship behind each item. It's a great chance to purchase some of these unique rugs, I'd suggest going around multiple shops and getting an idea of their price. Prices vary depending on the materials (silk or wool) and on the level of detail of the rug's drawing.

7. Lights at Night
Experience the magical ambiance of Bukhara and Samarkand's main squares adorned with colorful lights after dusk. Don't miss the captivating light show in Samarkand at 8:30 pm, adding an extra layer of enchantment to your evening.

8. Wander Around
The best way to experience these cities is to simply wander and explore beyond the usual tourist spots. Venture into the lesser-known neighborhoods and hidden corners, where everyday life unfolds in the most authentic way. In Samarkand, for example, the Jewish and Russian quarters offer a fascinating glimpse into the city’s diverse cultural mix. Each has its own unique character, shaped by history, traditions, and the people who call it home. Taking the time to explore these areas will give you a richer, more personal connection to Uzbekistan’s incredible heritage.
